What a beautiful morning to do a photoshoot. We met at Yates Mill Pond and I have never seen so many photographers at one location! This was my first time here and the only people I saw were there to get their photos taken or to take photos. It is a really nice area though. We went for a stroll and took pictures as we went and were able to get some really cute images. I love how the blue looked against the orange of the leaves.

This location was such a great place for photos, great choice Autumn! There are many water features, benche,s and great backdrops. We went right before sunset so the lighting was perfect and it wasn't unbearably hot - she isn't even breaking a sweat...oh, yea - I was the one lugging everything in my backpack. She is usually my assistant so I think this made me appreciate her on the other side of the lens that much more!

Spooky Parking Garage

As we were leaving the Tobacco Trail we entered the Parking Garage and saw some junk in the corner and didn't have to think twice before grabbing my other camera in the trunk to get these low lit photos. It is so fun working with Autumn, I swear we can read each others minds and she gives me such great mood and poses.

On this last photo, I had Autumn digitally paint a shadow figure on the wall. We decided to make it almost subliminal...something you might not notice the first time looking at the image but when you go back you're like "Oh! That's creepy!"

Today I had a photoshoot with the Moss family & extended family. Autumn found the best place to take the pictures. This cute little bridge was right in their neighborhood and provided some shade from the heat but we couldn't take much more than 30 minutes with the mosquito and heat combo. I seriously couldn't believe how easy it was to work with this family. They were very attentive to do whatever was needed and everyone actually looked at the camera, was super friendly and gave great smiles!

Before church, Christina, Rebeka and I tried again in the courtyard. At first it didn't look like we were going to have much luck but a wonderful woman came by and made Rebeka laugh for a while. I think we now have enough variety for the 6 month shoot!

Today I had a photoshoot for Rebeka Anne's 6 mo photos. Christina, her mother, and I have been trying to schedule this for a while and something seems to push the date back but we finally met at our church where it was cool and shady on this very hot day, and even had a playground for our kids, but as anyone who has children know, babies smile when they want to and Rebeka wasn't a fan of that today but we managed to get quite a few good ones anyway - how can we not with this adorable face but we plan to do a part 2 on Sunday. (I swear, this baby may not have been happy but does she ever cry?! So good!)

I don't do near enough still life photography but my husband picked some of our first Spring Tulips to bring into the house so I could enjoy them and I couldn't resist taking a couple of shots as the light poured in through the window. I planned to draw from one as a reference photo but I love them so much as they are I am now not sure. The "vase" is also special. My 9 yr old daughter picked out a salsa jar from the top of the garbage, cleaned it out, and started painting it. I think she is always trying to beat her artsy older sister to the "good trash". ;)

The Owen family welcomed a baby girl to their family in December and asked me to take some photos throughout her first year. She brought Rebeka's big brothers but I think they were way more interested in playing than having their photo taken. Here is my family photo, always the hardest to take, I need to do an exchange with another photographer.
We try to take our family picture on a Sunday, right after church while we are still dressed up. We were so fortunate to have a beautiful day to do it - right in the back yard. I later did each "kid" separately to frame.

Aperture Lesson for an 8 year old

Since my 8 year old daughter is always taking off with my camera (she loves to steal my camera phone!) I thought I would try to teach her about photography and if she ran away I would know she was too young but she is actually very intrigued and understands what I am saying so I first showed her basic parts of the camera and how they worked and how to focus using the focal points, making sure to press the shutter button half way down before re-composing a shot.

I also taught her about Aperture. This can be tricky to understand but here is how I explained it to her.
Aperture settings are known as F-stops and control the Depth-of-Field or how blurry the background is, also known as Bokeh. The LOWER the F-stop number (like 2) the LARGER or wider the lens opening (as shown below) resulting in more light and less time to develop the background so it turns out blurry. If you are doing a landscape then you might want the foreground AND the background in focus so you would use a SMALL Aperture or HIGHER F-stop like F-22.

Here are some photos that she took to practice.
Using my 50mm lens she used a Large Aperture of about f/2.8
so she didn't need to use the flash in this low-lit room.

I was able to take some school photos of the LaRocca kids. It's so nice to be able to take mulitple photos and have control over the images both in studio and in post production. I have been doing my own kids photos for quite a few years after getting the standard school photo that is not only hit or miss but very expensive when you have 5 kids, besides I like that all the kids photos match on my walls too!

When I saw this red and white polka dot dress I knew I had to go and get the biggest red balloon I could find for Karissa to take photos with, I think it worked out but it was really bright and hot and we only had a few minutes before I had a scheduled shoot to do some school pictures. We did the shoot because we had a meeting with an agency the next day and needed more "toothy" smiles so excuse the cheesyness - she usually smiles lips closed.

The Hardin boys were really fun to photograph but you had to be quick on the trigger as they were ready to play! I did however manage to get them one on one to take a couple of nice portrait shots. After taking these photos of my daughter I thought, 'wow, she is so good in front of the camera I bet she could be a model'. Karissa and I talked about it and she said it might be fun so I sent the photo below to the top two agencies in NC. We couldn't believe that they were actually both interested but after an interview we signed a contract with Marilyn's. We are very excited but don't know what to expect. I am a proud mamma! It will be so much fun for me as well to be able to watch the shoots and gleen what I can. What a fun thing for us to do together! I will be posting more photos for her portfolio soon.

Ok, when they are this adorable how am I suppose to choose?! Sophie is three and three year olds want to do what they want, and it's not posing for a camera (as seen in the second shot) but her mom has a way of making her laugh and as soon as we got outside she was in her element and this quiet little girl started singing and talking and ... posing! We shot for almost 2 hours between snacks and wardrobe changes and she did awesome as you can see in these pictures.

Mary and Erik's Wedding

On Saturday I went with my friend Rebecca from 4 Corners Photography to be her second shooter at a wedding. My job was to capture details and candids. The wedding was in Leelanau and on the way the rain turned into the first snow of the year. The beautiful outdoor setting they planned was ruined and I have to say I couldn't believe the brides amazing "next plan" attitude, they held the ceremony in a dim lit barn filled with tables for the reception and although it was not conducive to photography, it was romantic. After we went outside to take the formals, the bride proved how tough she really was as she stood for over an hour in 30 degree weather in her sleeveless dress - I actually got mild frostbite on my feet which remained numb for the rest of the evening! It may have been cold but I never seen more people get up and dance! Take a look at a few shots ...

Last Thursday Sara came over for her senior photoshoot. She brought some great scarfs that were a lot of fun to play with. It ended up raining through some of the shoot so we got out the umbrella and took advantage of the situation. She was such a great sport, I wish we could do it again! For a few years I have been doing a photoshoot of Karissa that includes a fantasy shoot - last year she was a cowgirl and this year she is a ballerina fairy. I always play music during my photoshoots so at the end I put on a fun dance song and said "ok, were done so now lets just have some fun - just go crazy and jump and dance!" I think those came out sooo cute - click on it the last pic to enlarge it.

Ya! I got my book today!
I was invited to be part of Blurb's PDF Beta Program. They asked me to create a book using a Adobe InDesign and to upload with a new system for a more professional way to create books.
As a thank you they gave me this 11x13 270 page Hardcover ImageWrap book!
This baby is big and beautiful, just take a look at some of the pages ...

The quality of the images was amazing. The colors were true to my calibrated monitor using their printer profiles so I have confidence to make books without worry of color casts. I was truly impressed with the photo quality - no pixlating or digitizing of the images!

I have to say that I now have more creative control than ever. This new way will not only save me time, so I can concentrate on the design end, but it allows me to make changes on the fly to better serve my customers needs.

Courtney Photoshoot

Since I have gotten my Canon 85mm 1.8 lens I haven't had much of a chance to really play with it so today I was able to get it into the field, literally with some photos of Courtney. It was getting late in the day and we were trying to catch the last rays of light which also meant the bugs soon started to feast on us and we high-tailed it out of there! This is just one part of her photoshoot. She will also be doing one with a dress at another location soon.

Yesterday I had to photograph a wedding reception in Traverse City at The Frog Pond Village so I took my daughter Autumn along with me as a second shooter. I thought it would be good experience for her and any extra photos would be a benefit to the bride. She actually did a great job and I was happy she went. The bride's name was Becky and she contacted me online so we didn't meet until the day of. She had a lovely British accent and let me know again that she did not want any formal photos but just wanted me to document the day for her. The bride and groom (Becky and Shane) are shown in the last photo kissing. I am sure that everyone was sick of us taking photos but they were all very nice and accommodating. Saturday I was a second shooter at a wedding here in Traverse City. My friend Rebecca from 4 Corners Photography is a seasoned event photographer in the area and asked me to be her second shooter, it was a lot of fun to hang out with her and get some more experience. The bride was just beautiful and the ceremony was very touching. Here were a few shots I got... Since I was not the main photographer I never got a direct photo, most of my shots were candids but I loved watching Rebecca, she was amazing!

A Different Kind of Senior Portrait!

Last week my daughter and I went to a local retirement home to take some photos of about 25 residence. We really had a nice time. They seemed very happy to have their picture taken and the staff was wonderful to work with and very accommodating. I hope that it will be a nice Valentines gift for their loved ones. I really enjoy spending time with these people and hope to be back soon!

It's getting COLD! There wasn't any snow on the ground but it was still pretty cold and windy and we were losing daylight quick but I think we got some really cute shots and believe it or not it is actually better conditions than a bright sunny day. We moved inside where I have my studio set-up to do some backdrops and get warm. I actually used the strobes instead of the natural lighting I usually use. Sarah brought along her sister and we had a lot of fun - she even got to direct a few shots...maybe I will do her senior photos is a few years.

This Sunday I was able to have an almost impromptu photoshoot with a great family I have known for quite a few years (we were pregnant for our last babies together). She thought it would be great to take advantage of the last of our fall leaves and take some photos of her and the kids while her husband was at work. I went to her amazing home and was able to take some fun shots of the kids and their new kitty in their favorite places in the yard & lake.

Kristin was the 2nd shoot of the day. She brought her sister so we took a couple of poses of the two of them. I had to keep commenting on how her coloring was perfect for the fall backdrop. She was an excellent model and everything went smooth. I also have to add that I couldn't help but think she resembled Kirstin Dunst in a few frames.

This Saturday I had a couple of photoshoots and Meghan was the first. She wanted to go to a Traverse City location where I have shot before, it has lots of textures and variety of backdrops perfect for an Urban look and is very popular with the local photographers. We did go over some taped off areas to get some of the shots but it was worth it - shhh don't tell anyone!

LaPonsie Family Photoshoot 10-13-08

This photoshoot was a fulfillment of an auction donation at my church...lucky for me my close friend was kind enough to bid all her auction money to win it so it was extra special to do this shoot for her and her family. We were lucky enough to do this on what was probably the last warm day of the year, it was warm yet overcast so perfect conditions for taking pictures. We went to Fife Lake and we had the whole place to ourselves with some great areas to work with. They were a lot of fun and was up for anything. The pictures came out nice I they seem to be happy with the results.

Kayla and her mom had a Saturday appointment and the weather was the best it had been all week so we really lucked out! Kayla had already had some Senior photos taken elsewhere but wanted to get some retakes so I hope she is happy with the result of these - She did a great job!

Today was such a beautiful day to take some pictures, I don't think we will have many more days like this one! Katy came over to finish up her senior pictures with some backdrops, we wanted to make sure that we included her gorgeous class ring in some of the shots too. She is so photogenic - her eyes are amazing on camera! Everything went great and here are the shots to prove it ...

Scott's Senior Photos 9-22-08

Scott had his senior session yesterday and brought along his Mother and Sister - what a nice family! We had a nice overcast and the temperature was perfect. The shoot really went smooth and just when I think Scott was starting to enjoy himself, it was over ... but we managed to get a lot of great shots!

Every year I take the girls "school pictures" even if they aren't in school but I like to have consistency for the stairway display and hey, I have to make use of this photography thing!
The hardest thing to photograph though is the family photo, it's kind of like cutting your own hair, you can't really see what is going on - not my favorite but we are all in the picture!

A little break from Seniors today, this morning I was went to go shoot some more food for Schelde's menu. My daughter Courtney came along even thought I didn't think I needed an assistant today but boy was I glad she came, she was actually a big help and had to run (literally) to the fabric store because the swatches that were suppose to be waiting for me had mysteriously disappeared. I love doing these shoots and the time flies by. Afterward we were able to eat lunch - on the house...nice! Here are a couple items.

Katy's Senior Photos - 9-16-08

This is part 1 of Katy's senior photo session. I met her at her home where they have over 70 acres! Her black lab kept us company and the bright sunny day actually worked in our favor for the shots that we were going for in the field. Katy wanted to make sure to document some of her favorite spots, including a big tree she played in as a child. She was great to work with and was up for anything, I am looking forward to working with this beautiful model again soon!

Laura's Senior Photos - 9-15-08

What a face! Monday I met with Laura at my house and it was getting late so we had to get this shoot going because we had lots to do! This girl has got talent - she brought along with her a full-sized xylophone, (not easy to set up :) an acoustic AND electric guitar, violin, bass violin, and drums - most of which she has taught herself ... not to mention the piano. We also went out to her home where they have a huge lake, I had no idea that a lake like that was so close, she even has her own boat. You have to check out the rest of these photos HERE.

Here is one I did of the Parlette family, I also did individual photos of each person and of each of their 3 dogs ... opps I didn't get the cat! The last one is an experiment with a style I am a big fan of - I thought it would be fun and you can really see their personality as a family.

It is hard to pick what photos to show but the top one was my favorite - Lacee brought the ultimate prop - her boyfriend of 2 years! They were really comfortable posing together and I think I actually got some of the best shots together - it didn't hurt that I also did his Senior photos last year.

Karissa lost her top tooth a week ago and guess what she wanted to buy with her $2 "toothfairy" money? A photoshoot. Yes, she actually came up to me and said she wanted a proof book and was willing to pay for it. Too funny, of course I said no but I knew it was time for her yearly shoot.

We went with a country / cowgirl theme since this child is obsessed with horses. Autumn painted her crappy jumping horse and made it look like a beautiful carosel horse. She is way to big to ride it but don't tell her that! Well, here is a sample of the photos (so hard to not post more!)

It was really a fun shoot but very HOT - she was a good sport in that turtle neck!

Well, I did it. I photographed my first wedding this month and I have a lot more respect for wedding photographers - that was tough. I realized even though I had 2 SLR digital cameras, multiple lenses & a speedlight, I would want better equipment to offer wedding photography services. I was glad to hear that the bride, groom and family were all very happy with the results. Here are some of my favorites ...

Shelde's Menu Photography

Thursday I did my first food photos. I went to Schelde's Restaraunt and took photos of 11 dishes for thier chef's reference menu and possible future menu. My daughter Ashley went with me to assist and it was harder than I thought but more fun that I thought. I really had to work hard to get the right shots but knowing we could eat them inspired me to move on. :) I was pretty happy with them, especially considering it was a first for me but I guess not the last, The manager wants me to come back a couple more times and do appetizers and desserts.

I just made my first photography book and am really excited about it.
No, I am not planning on selling it, although it is available to the public for 0 profit. It is 40 pages of my favorite photos and the book is 7x7. (LINK)
I made this for me and clients and I had a lot of fun creating it.
So fun in fact I definitely plan to offer both softcover and hardcover books in the future for all photo sessions.

"Nifty Fifty" Lens

I was really excited to try out my new Canon 50mm f/1.8II Lens after hearing so many rave reviews about it so Autumn and I stepped out into the fridged cold to try it out. We were in pain when we came in but I was pleased with the results.
(The color temps are intentional to add drama to different photos.)
